Javi Romero of the Dead
A downloadable game
JAVI ROMERO OF THE DEAD is a retro horror beat 'em up about baseball bats, scarce bullets, endless hordes of the undead and a night that refuses to end.
October 31, 1987. The church clock in Villasombría strikes twelve and stops. The dead crawl out of their graves with a simple plan: conquer the world before dawn. And someone has made sure the sun never rises again. The police are at a costume contest, the army is stuck in traffic and the mayor got eaten in the middle of his speech.
That leaves Javi Romero: leather jacket, a bat wrapped in barbed wire and a pistol with five lousy bullets. No training, no superpowers and no intention of saving humanity. Just very little patience.
What begins in a cemetery quickly turns into a journey through cursed towns, witch-haunted forests, ghost ships, frozen peaks and ancient pyramids, all the way to the place where the night itself was born.
The campaign contains 50 missions divided into 10 worlds, each with its own look, its own creatures and its own boss waiting at the end.
10 Episodes. 50 Levels. No Time to Die.
Every world contains five missions and introduces a new setting, new monsters and new ways to die.
- The Cemetery: open graves, foggy crypts and a gravedigger with a very big shovel.
- The Cursed Town: zombie neighbors, dark alleys, sewer rats and a mayor who won't stay dead.
- The Witches' Forest: wolves, will-o'-the-wisps, drowned marshes and a coven in the stone circle.
- The Haunted Mansion: walking suits of armor, family ghosts and a vampire who never loses a dance.
- The Pumpkin Kingdom: cornfields, an abandoned fair, kamikaze pumpkins and a king with a scythe.
- The Ghost Ship: fog, drowned sailors, angry octopuses and a captain who has waited three centuries for a duel.
- The Forbidden Laboratory: failed experiments, flying brains and a doctor who loves lightning a little too much.
- The Frozen Mountains: snowmen that throw back, frozen villagers and a ten-foot yeti.
- The Pyramid of the Black Sun: mummies, cursed treasure and a pharaoh who wanted to put out the sun.
- The Eternal Night: a bridge of bones, a hall of mirrors and the one who stopped the clock.
An Arsenal Built for Halloween
Bullets are scarce, so make every swing count.
Your arsenal includes:
- Barbed-wire baseball bat
- Fists and kicks
- Pistol
- Holy water
- Candle flamethrower
- Candy machine gun
- Explosive pumpkins
Finish zombies off up close to earn more bullets, soak ghosts in holy water, roast the hordes with candles and toss pumpkins into the thick of them. Each weapon has its moment, and knowing which one to use matters more with every world.
And when things get really ugly, jump into the Coffin Tank: a coffin on tracks with a machine gun and a mortar.
Two Heroes, One Very Long Night
Start the night as Javi, whose bat hits harder than anything else in town.
Defeat the first boss and free Mart, a bare-knuckle brawler whose kicks hit harder than his punches. Both carry a pistol, and both can kick. Choose your fighter before every run.
Monsters That Change With Every World
Zombies that shamble, run or spit acid. Bats, ghosts, skeletons, rats, wolves, living suits of armor, kamikaze pumpkins, octopuses, flying brains, snowmen, mummies and shadows that only take shape when they attack.
Every creature has its own way of moving and attacking, and later worlds mix them all together.
And then there are the bosses.
The Gravedigger, the Zombie Mayor, the Witch Queen, the Vampire Count, the Pumpkin King, Captain Skull, Doctor Mortis, the Great Yeti, the Black Pharaoh and Samhain, Lord of the Eternal Night. Each has their own set of attacks: charges, leaps, attacks that rain from the sky and waves of hazards that sweep across the ground. Many reveal a second, deadlier phase when they're down to half health.
More Than Survival
- Rescue the kids: smash open the cages and free the trick-or-treaters the dead have trapped.
- Bet your candy: between worlds, a spooky pachinko machine lets you gamble the candy you've collected for ammo, special weapons and extra lives.
- A comic-book intro: the story of the night the dead took over Villasombría, told panel by panel.
Four Ways to Suffer
Choose Easy, Normal, Hard or Nightmare before every run. Easy gives you an extra heart and more health drops; Nightmare gives you exactly one heart.
Chase Better Times
JAVI ROMERO OF THE DEAD tracks much more than whether you survived.
The game records your best times in every mission, in every world played from start to finish and in complete campaign runs, along with detailed statistics about how you play.
Every difficulty has its own leaderboards. Compare mission times, world times, full-run times and player totals with everyone else, and see the top 10 on Easy, Normal, Hard and Nightmare.
Beating a Mission Is Only the Beginning
The game includes more than 300 achievements that reward skill, speed, persistence and a healthy amount of zombie-smashing creativity.
Some are simple milestones. Others ask you to play very differently: finish a mission without taking a single hit, rescue every kid, beat a demanding target time, or take down a boss under very specific conditions.
Achievements are organized into three categories:
- General: kill streaks, frenzies, multi-kills with a single pumpkin, marathon distances, pachinko jackpots and more.
- World: complete an entire world without dying, beat its time target, and master two unique challenges built around each world's monsters and boss.
- Mission: every one of the 50 missions has its own set: Cleared, Not a Scratch, No Kid Left Behind and Time Trial.
Some achievements are secret and only reveal themselves once unlocked. See how rare each one is among all players, and who has unlocked the most.
Classic Controls, Your Way
Walk, run, jump, crouch, swing, kick and shoot with simple keyboard controls, all fully remappable. Switch weapons in an instant and keep moving.
JAVI ROMERO OF THE DEAD supports both English and Spanish, saves your progress and statistics, and lets you replay any mission you've unlocked from the world map.
